Squats are one of the best exercises you can do — when your knees feel good. These tips help you squat deeper, stronger and with less discomfort.
1. Warm up properly
Spend 5–10 minutes on light cardio, then do bodyweight squats, lunges and leg swings. Warm joints move more smoothly.
2. Let your knees travel
It's fine for your knees to move past your toes. What matters is that they track in line with your feet rather than caving inward.
3. Find your stance
Most people squat best with feet about shoulder-width apart and toes turned out slightly. Experiment until the movement feels natural.
4. Strengthen your hips
Weak glutes often let the knees collapse inwards. Add band walks and glute bridges with booty bands to your warm-up.
5. Add warmth and support
Knee sleeves keep the joint warm and give a reassuring, snug feel during heavy sets. For maximal lifts, experienced lifters sometimes use knee wraps.
6. Progress slowly
Add weight gradually — about 2.5–5 kg per week is plenty. If pain is sharp or lasts after training, stop and see a physiotherapist.
